Promised Miracles have generously put together a sumptuous slice of what’s to expect on the lyrical rolling hills of this year’s Paradise festival. Run by a collective of creatives, the boutique festival showcases some of Australia’s best emerging musicians and artists. Celebrated on the brink of summer in the alpine wonderland of Lake Mountain, Paradise aims to reinterpret Melbourne’s cosmopolitan culture at a home away from home.
Their debut lineup is an eclectic mix of musical masters, each sure to bring a unique style and sentiment to the highly anticipated weekend. The mixtape features eight contemporary artists that will grace the stages of Paradise this year.
The mixtape opens with Client Liaison’s, “Feelings”, an 80’s pop power track with an inherently disco feel. The videogame-esque electro progression breathes a sigh of nostalgia, combined with a funky synth section that is oh, so irresistible. The track is the perfect kick-off for the mixtape, with heavy synth lines leaving you feeling somewhat invigorated and ready to get down. FRIENDSHIPS, “10hunna” follows on, a shambles of chaotic bliss. Layer upon layer of effect-laden loops, barks and rackets that work together so cohesively and build continuity to a more expansive (if you can believe it) soundscape of mayhem. Next up is DEJA’s, “Split” is almost angelic in it’s approach with a whimsy of electro pangs and wistful vocals. This easy on the ear track carries through, rising and falling seamlessly. Glass Towers’, “Jumanji (Dappled Cities Remix)” is rife with tropicana chords, shifting rhythms and bellowing choruses.
In short, it’s hella catchy. ALTA’s“Stepping Out” has a dreamlike projection rife with intricate percussion and understated electronica that accompanies the unique vocal. The next track slips into an almost folk like euphony with WAFIA’s soulfully floaty, “Winter”. Millions’, “Nineteen” draws you in with a catchy chord progression and owns garage rock in it’s all it’s glory. “Damaskus 2” demands your attention with its primal rhythm and ferocious riffs. If this DARTS number can’t get you moving, I don’t know what can.
The mixtape conveys to a tee the diverse intermingling of musical talent that will be on display at Paradise. A veritable goodie bag of contemporary acts that cannot be ignored.
Review Score: 9.0 out of 10.
